What is TKR surgery?

Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery is the replacement of the damaged; warn out cartilage surface of the knee joint

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is the damage and wear out of the cartilage, that lines the joint surface, leading to rubbing off bone ends onto each other causing pain, gritty, feeling in the knee.

TKR surgery procedures

TKR surgery is done to replace the damaged cartilage, eroded bone ends of the distal end of the thigh bone (femur) and the upper portion of the calf bone (Tibia), by replacing with a metal and plastic prosthesis.

Who needs TKR?

TKR is advised for individual with severe joint pains, with damage to an extent hindering their day to day activities, walking associated with pain that worsens, difficulty in sitting, climbing / getting down the stairs.

Age restrictions

TKR is usually advised for individuals who have severe knee damage, but due to changing life style conditions, many young individuals are being affected, who can be treated by other means, advised after careful examination by our doctors, patients of older age groups are examined by our team of Anaesthetists andare given surgical fitners.

Post TKR Rehabilitation

Post operative period of TKR surgery is a very well planned and organized programmed, customized to the individual, in most the individual is made to walk the day after surgery, and an organized physiotherapy program is designed to fit the needs of the individual carefully carried out by our team of physiotherapists.

Time to get back to normal routine / daily activities / work?

Post TKR surgery, we advised the individual to use a walker / crutch support for 1 week to 10 days, in the meantime they are encouraged to walk, do daily activities of living unassisted and also can get back to light work (desk job / involving no heavy physical strain) as fast as 4 to 6 weeks from the date of surgery.

TKR prosthesis types and evolution

TKR prosthesis designs have dynamically evolved over the years, to endure the stress of the joint and function as normal as to a native joint and newer tech advances, now allow to design the prosthesis custom-made / fit for the individual, to aid in more degree / range of motion.

TKR prosthesis are not made of many different compositions, to suit to the need of the individual, with high precision, and also come in inert composition for those with known metal allergy history.

Alternatives to TKR in young patients

A current trend of many young individuals being affected by knee joint osteoarthritis, especially patellofemoral arthritis, there are many treatment designs to fit the need of the young individual to treat them. Which are planned for the individual, post through examination by our doctor.
